Spa Green Estate

 Another day, another estate designed by Lubetkin. This time it's the Spa Green Estate in Clerkenwell - it lies just off Rosebery Avenue, opposite Sadler's Wells Theatre.

Designed in 1938 by Skinner, Bailey and Lubetkin, the estate was eventually built in 1943 and the official opening ceremony took place six years later.

 There are three buildings - Sadler House, Wells House and Tunbridge House.

Spa Green was granted a grade II* listing in 1998. Ten years later Islington Council worked with English Heritage to restore the buildings, matching the architect's original plans as closely as possible.

Double glazed windows were also added - with slightly thicker frames than the originals (don't think anyone's complaining about that though - the horror stories you hear about Keeling House and its archaic windows in the winter are a story for another day).

The estate is now run by a resident-elected management organization and is a mix of privately owned and council flats. Last year a two-bedroom flat was on the market for £425,000.

In the original design the kitchens had slide-away ironing boards and breakfast counters, as well as a central waste disposal system.
