Win a tour of the Trellick Tower (with LLCH)!

Since I started writing LLCH by far the most popular post has been the self-guided tour of the Trellick Tower (20k visits and counting!).

With that in mind, LLCH has teamed up with Open House London to offer six readers a chance to have a peek around inside the building as part of a special tour. Included is the lobby and a few flats for you to have a look at.

To enter please leave a comment below, giving your reasons for wanting to visit. Also, please leave a contact email address.

The tour will take place at 1730hrs on Sunday, September 22. So before entering please make sure you can be there!

Of course, tours are running of the building throughout the day as part of the Open House weekend, but this will allow you guaranteed entry and a chance to speak to some of the custodians of this magnificent residential tower.

Good luck!

Entries close at 10pm, Sunday September 15. Winners will be chosen by LLCH and notified on Monday, September 16.

  1. I want to visit Trellick Tower because I regularly pass it on the Westway and have always wondered how it is from inside. And I love london council housing. rayallen153@gmail.com

  2. I would like to visit with my neighbour Lyla. While growing up in Kensal Green she believed that Father Christmas lived at the top of Trellick Tower. We now both live at the top of a brutalist tower block in Elephant & Castle. There's no sign of Father Christmas here but she's still unsure about Trellick. We need to come and investigate. Thanks very much. @benmason arethereanyleft@gmail.com

  3. What an opportunity. When I moved to London, this tower was really the first tall building I saw here - well, apart from the well-known ones in the City (but that probably doesn't count as you don't have to go to London to know what the Gherkin looks like).

I was yet to learn the history of this bulding and didn't even know its name, but was using it actively as a beacon when navigating around the area meeting letting agents.

Now several years have passed, and it's probably time to have a closer look. /akopov@hotmail.co.uk/

Trellick Tower is on the top of my list this year - on a recent Spy tour around the city I was curious to hear the story of Ian Fleming and Erno Goldfinger....I google everything on him now (sad I know)- would be so nice so actually tour one of his most iconic tower blocks.

  5. Because I've been fascinated by the place since I was little - I even built a Lego model of it when I was about 12 - and nowadays I have pictures of it on my own photos website. And I regularly drive past it and love it. (colinsaxelby@gmail.com)

  6. I would love to come with my teenage son Alfie, who loves tall buildings but may be yet to be convinced by brutalism. Open House London is our favourite weekend of the year. spruyttruda@gmail.com

  7. I used to live on Oxford Gardens, and work on Kensal Road, so each day I would walk to work and breakfast at Lisboa, sitting out on the pavement come rain or shine, gazing up at the Trellick, wondering what the view must be like from the top... (design@marcusainley.co.uk)

  8. I have been interested in this building since I was a child - growing up in Holland Park - and now I'd love to show it to my son - who is already talking about shapes in buildings s.archetti@gmail.com

  9. My dad was a bricklayer, and worked on the building of Trellick Tower when I was a little girl. We lived just down the other end of Golborne Road, in Chesterton Road. I have never been inside the building, and would love a tour. To think, my dad was instrumental in the construction of this iconic building!

  10. One of the iconic buildings of London, who wouldn't want to go and see it? I am curious about how the inside compares to its brutalist but somehow still attractive outside. I've entered the ballot before for Trellick Tower but was unlucky and did not get a ticket. Maybe this time? (annebienia@hotmail.com)

  11. What an opportunity to see one of the few remaining Brutalist buildings that aren't demolished or completely renovated! A few years ago I wrote my dissertation on Park Hill, Sheffield, and also sneaked into Robin Hood Gardens, so it would be absolutely amazing to compare Trellick to these other estates! 12. What a great opportunity- have loved Trellick Tower for years. After going on an inspiring guided tour of Willow House, designed and built by Erno Goldfinger for his own family, I would love to see his ideas as social housing. Plus the view will be amazing!

  13. I'd love to see it because my current lifelong ambition is to make a scale model of it out of matchsticks (inside a wine bottle standing vertically) and to prove my gf wrong when she says I'm not going to get a tour with "that rubbish".

  14. I'd like to see it from inside because first of all, I love the design and secondly, I see it every day when I look out my Notting Hill studio windows. info@encym.net

  15. Your description of Trellick Tower as a 'High-rise brutalist building' is the most accurate I came across. This building definitely repels and intrigues at the same time, which is exactly why I'd like a tour of it. (Eran, tt@over-here.org)

  16. I would love to go on the tour as it's a modernist masterpiece and has inspired everyone from The Clash to Will Self (and even has a cameo in The Professionals). I used to stare at the tower every weekend as a child when we'd go up to visit my grandmother in Kilburn. You could see it very clearly from her fourth floor balcony and I always wondered how such a building came to be there. So for both those reasons I would really enjoy seeing the building close up... though I also hear that every major corner is rounded, now that's attention to detail I would love to see firsthand.

    Thanks

For all of my adult life I passed 'this weird housing block with separate staircase' from the A40. I then read an article in one of the broadsheets in the early 90's about Trellick Tower, its unique design, and how many an aspiring architect wanted to live there. I met my wife (then girlfriend) in 1993 and it became a joke that every time we passed I would point it out and summarise why architects wanted to live there - Groundhog day style. (As the first time I ever told her she found it boring and thought me a weirdo for knowing). She is now a convert and was equally happy to spot the Trellick Tower mugs in an art shop in Southwold, Suffolk. I'd love to visit the tower for these reasons.

  18. I would be absolutely thrilled to have the chance to visit Trellick Tower. I applied in the ballot last year and missed out, and it's so far from where I live that it would be a bit of a gamble to travel all the way there and not be able to get in! Anyway - I have my fingers crossed! carys.kennedy@gmail.com

  19. What a great prize! I'm really curious to know what it is about the inside of the flats that makes so many architects - and Father Christmas - want to live there.

  20. I'm preparing to research a book on public housing in London and New York, so this visit would be inspirational and informative. I want to learn more about something that appears to be greatly misunderstood by many outside observers: the progressive, at times utopian elements in the architecture of London's public housing, which the Trellick Tower seems to exemplify. And I want to hear from some of the building's custodians and tenants about what THEY love about London council housing, and see how they have shaped the interiors and exteriors of this living piece of urban design.

  21. I've lived near Trellick for most of my life and never been inside! I'm particularly curious about the lifts...

  22. I have been staring at this tower my whole life and wondering what it must be like inside. Everyone in the architectural community talks about this building and I would love to say I have been inside. What a rare opportunity.

  23. I have never won anything!

Plus, after living in west London for the past 2 years, I am moving back to the States in November, so this will be my last chance.

  24. I want to visit the Trellick Tower because I want to know the whole story. The exterior is so striking, and also tantalising…what is inside!? How do people make their homes within it? Much of the delight at 2 Willow Road lies in Goldfinger’s interest in small interior details - i.e the deep window sills and the position of the light switches. How does this translate into a social housing project where many different people will be living? Speaking to residents on how they adapt to one man’s vision would be fascinating. I would love this opportunity to deepen my understanding of an iconic London building (lauraesslemont@hotmail.com).

I would love to visit the Trellick Tower, maybe one day I can get the chance!

    Best regards,
